Team Fortress 2 Spy Guide

February 10, 2008

The Spy is the most dreaded class in Team Fortress 2: With the ability to cloak and disguise as an enemy, he causes every member of the opposing team to franticly check behind them, inspect any teammates, investigate any strange noise, and look around for him. Everyone from the Heavy to Engineer is afraid that he’ll sneak into their base and kill them off one by one.

1. Weapons
Your Revolver is more powerful than the typical Pistol, but still weak when compared to any other weapon. Since you’re going to be disguised, stabbing, or sapping most of the time you aren’t going to need it that often. Your Sapper will disable any Engineer building that you use it on, as long as you’re in melee range. It will destroy the building if an Engineer doesn’t get rid of your Sapper fast enough. You knife is weaker than most melee weapons, but it will instantly kill if you stab someone in the back.

2. Cloaking
When you press your secondary fire button, you turn invisible for a while. It doesn’t instantly activate, so wait for two seconds before you run where someone can see you. You’ll turn slightly visible if you get hit by a weapon or bump into an enemy, so it’s best to avoid any contact. You can’t use any weapons when you’re cloaked, and it take a second before you can use them after you disable your cloak. It lasts for ten seconds and takes half a minute to recharge, so you’ll want to run from cover to cover, and make sure that no one sees you.

3. Disguising
You can disguise as an enemy character and pretend to be on the other team, so that you can infiltrate the enemy base and destroy Sentries, kill enemies, steal the intelligence, or capture a point. It takes three seconds to disguise, so hide until you get a notification that you’re disguised before you run out. Since teammates are able to run through each other, and you don’t, you’ll never want to get near someone who could walk into you, and see that you’re a Spy. It’s also a good idea to stay away from narrow areas because of this, and even take a longer, indirect path to your destination. If there’s only one way into an enemy base, then run backwards, and if someone sees you, press the Medic button so enemies will think you got damaged and need help. You can also disguise as someone on your team, which isn’t very useful, but if you dress up as a Medic you can draw away attention from an actual Medic who’s getting an Ubercharge ready.

4. Getting Rid of Engineers
Since you get a weapon that only works against Engineer, it’s safe to assume that you’re going to go after Engineers a lot. You don’t lose your disguise when you use it, but people will still know you’re a Spy when you’re the only one near a sapped Sentry. If you go up to a building and sap it, you’ll probably get killed within 3 seconds. This could be useful if you sap a Sentry right when a Soldier on your team runs in and destroys it, but other than that you’ll be out of luck. If you see the Engineer, you can back stab him when he moves away from his Sentry, and then freely sap his buildings. Since that’s the case only a tenth of the time, you need to get a better strategy. If the Engineer is close enough to the Sentry to repair it, you can sap it, run to a corner that he can’t see, and stab him when he runs in to repair his gun. If an Engineer has his buildings spread out, or if he’s taking care of two sets of buildings at once (and the other Engineer is gone), you can quickly run in, sap everything, and then just sap whatever he fixes, or stab him if he didn’t fix his Sentry, and once you’ve destroyed all that you need to, and then stab him if you didn’t already do it, or run away if he starts attacking you. This won’t work if he’s in a group, so don’t sap a building in that scenario unless you know a teammate will run in and destroy everything.

5. Back Stabbing
Take out your Knife, aim at someone’s back, and press fire. Whoever you ended up hitting will die, and if no one saw you, you’re safe. Snipers, Heavies, Soldiers and Demomen are perfect targets since Snipers are focus on their scopes, and the other three move slower than you. Obviously, Scouts are bad targets since they move twice as fast as you. You lose your disguise when you stab someone, so don’t do it if someone’s looking unless you HAVE to take out a Medic before he can use his Ubercharge.

6. Avoid Pyros
Since enemies can still hurt you when you are disguised or cloaked, a Pyro can still set you on fire. The Pyro and anyone nearby will see you, and then shoot you. Pyros tend to randomly shoot their Flamethrower, so don’t go near a Pyro.
